Multicultural Initiatives Summer 2008 Theatre Paid Internships

DESCRIPTION

Texas Nonprofit Theatres is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the theatres of Texas and the communities they serve. TNT, with the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts, sponsors internships to address the needs of theatres for qualified assistance, and the need of students for information about theatre careers and for job opportunities in the field.

GOAL

The goal of the program is to expose students to the theatre profession by:

  • providing firsthand experience working with and in theatres;
  • giving an overview of current issues in the profession;
  • facilitating job opportunities through contacts made in the Texas theatre community.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates must be majoring in theatre or theatre management, and must have completed their Sophomore year by the time the internship begins in May. Graduate students may also apply.

Applicants must be Texas students, or Texas residents in school elsewhere.

Students of every race, religion, gender, and ethnic and economic background are eligible to apply.

PERIOD AND SITES OF INTERNSHIP

Begins May 19, 2008, and ends August 1, 2008. Two days (one at the beginning and one at the end) will be spent in the TNT offices in Fort Worth. Following initial work at TNT, interns will have five week residencies at two different theatres - to be named. Please note: the host theatre chooses the intern they want, as opposed to the intern choosing the theatre.

COMPENSATION

Interns will receive $2,500 for the employment period. Lodging will be provided by the host theatres during the residencies. Lodging could consist of an apartment, a room in someone's home, a dorm room, etc.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Depending on the theatres chosen for placements, the residencies may include artistic, technical, and administrative experiences and duties. The focus of the internship is determined by the individual theatres. Interns will be mentored during their placements by the heads of the divisions in which they work. Initiative is a must. Interest is working with young people is a plus. Previous placements included: Theatre Three in Dallas, Midland Community Theatre, Shakespeare Festival of Dallas, Dallas Children's Theater, Amarillo Little Theatre, Angelo Civic Theatre in San Angelo, Temple Civic Theatre, Stage West in Fort Worth, Irving Arts Center, Theatre Arlington, S.T.A.G.E., Inc., Bulverde, Denton Community Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, Camille Players in Brownsville, Butterfield Stage in Gainesville, the State Theater Company in Austin, the Alley Theatre in Houston, WaterTower Theatre in Addison, Playhouse 2000 in Kerrville, The Gem Theatre in Claude, Kitchen Dog Theatre in Dallas, Ensemble Theatre in Houston, Hill Country Community Theatre in Marble Falls, and ArtsView Children's Theatre in Longview.

TERMS OF INTERNSHIP / REQUIREMENTS

Interns must have a car or be responsible for own local transportation.

Interns must be available for travel throughout the period.

Interns must be able to commit to the completion of the program. He or she will be asked to sign a contract to confirm the commitment. If the contract is broken by the intern, only the portion of the salary for which the intern worked will be paid.

Interns must have demonstrated communication skills.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed by TNT Projects Committee and by the Executive Director. Eight (8) candidates will receive scholarships, which include registration fees and hotel room costs to attend Conference 2008 and complete an interview during conference. Student membership ($15) in TNT is required for applicants who are accepted to interview, as is attendance at conference workshops and events. Conference dates are March 27-30, 2008 at the Sheraton in Irving.

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Application Form (in theatre dept. office, on TNT's web site, or call TNT to have one sent)
  • Most current college transcript (official copy)
  • Letter of recommendation from a college professor in the student's field of study
  • Complete resume of work/experience/roles/teaching experience/technical experience, etc. Include everything pertinent. Two page limit.

Membership and Waiver Form.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance for interview by mid-February, 2008. The final decision of the Interview Committee will be announced by mid-April, 2008.
